Man allegedly caused accident outside Sioux Falls school, went on racist rant against the man he hit
Christopher Egan is accused of causing a vehicular accident, and going on a racially charged tirade outside Cleveland Elementary on Wednesday morning as kids were being dropped off for school
In a troubling incident at a local school in Sioux Falls, a man named Christopher Egan has been accused of causing a car accident, then subsequently launching into a racist tirade against the African American man he hit.
The incident also caused concern over the adequacy of the response from law enforcement, as the officer on scene sat idly by while Egan berated the person he hit, and those who arrived to assist.
The unsettling event occurred on Wednesday morning when, according to Egan, his car allegedly stalled, and an African American man pulled out and hit him.
Other witnesses and bystanders shared a very different story of what happened.
We were told by eyewitnesses that Egan drove recklessly and collided with the other vehicle.
Eyewitnesses also reported that Egan's car did not stall, as he claimed to the police. Rather, he was driving too fast and drove over the other man’s car.
Officer McCarthy from the Sioux Falls Police Department, arrived on the scene to handle the situation.
While he efficiently gathered red tags and insurance information, his decision to remain in his patrol car while Egan continued to sling racist insults at the African American man and his friends, was met with disapproval from bystanders and others involved — to the point the officer said the tow truck driver even came to tell him.
Despite the verbal assault by Egan, no immediate action was taken to curb his behavior. The Officer did, however, take the time to thank the African American group for not feeding into the man’s verbal assaults.
The person Egan collided with maintained his composure despite the barrage of insults and slurs, and was later joined by friends who came to support him due to the hostile environment created by Egan.
Instead of showing any concern for the well-being of the individual he hit, Egan escalated his verbal assault, referring to the man’s friends as "thugs" and other racially charged insults.
School staff handled it with much more grace. One of the staff de-escalated Chris the best they could, while the principal came out to give updates to parents on how Kids were after the incident.
A school employee intervened, attempting to calm Egan down, but to no avail. The racist tirade continued, showing Egan’s blatant disregard for the dignity and well-being of the individual he hit, as well the other individual’s friends.
Parents and other witnesses expressed concern over the Officer’s lack of action regarding Egan’s verbal assault on others.
One parent, who arrived shortly after the accident, stayed to assist the man who was hit by Egan. This parent, whose child attends the school, expressed profound disappointment at both the police officer's and the school employee's handling of the situation.
The parent noted that while no physical injuries were reported, the psychological and emotional impact on the African American man and his friends, was significant.
A quick online search on Egan showed that the incident didn’t appear to be a one off adrenaline filled tirade.
Some posts he shared to Facebook included anti-immigrant content, posts he made as recently as early September.

A friend of the man hit by Egan had to translate for him due to a language barrier, making the Officer’s explanation as to why he was being ticketed, despite his car being the one underneath Egan’s, a challenge.
Well, let's unpack this one piece by piece.
A man was driving too fast and had an accident.
The police were called, and one showed up.
The officer did his job in collecting evidence and insurance info.
When the asshat started cussing out the Black Gentleman, the cop stayed out of it.
Which was the correct thing to do, as hurling racist names isn't a crime.
If you want to fault the cop for not getting involved in a public disturbance, you can.
But consider this: in 2020-2022, people were trying to disband the police and called them racist.
So, I can't blame the cop for not getting involved.
Kudos to the school staff for de-escalating the situation.
But that's just my opinion.
