There are currently 425,431 noncitizens with criminal convictions at large in the US
Of the 647,572 noncitizens with criminal histories on ICE's national docket that fall under the NON-DETAINED category, 425,431 are convicted criminals, and 222,141 have pending criminal charges
In a letter sent to Rep. Tony Gonzales on September 25th by ICE Deputy Director Patrick J. Lechleitner, he provided ICE data that breaks down the total number of detained and non-detained noncitizens with criminal charges and criminal records in the US.
In the letter, the Director made clear that local jurisdictions in certain areas of the country, mainly sanctuary cities and states, have refused to cooperate with ICE’s detainer requests, despite many of these requests being related to noncitizens who have committed and been convicted of serious felonies, and are an ongoing threat to the public.
A reason cited in the letter for the lack of cooperation is that it may erode trust between federal immigration officials and the immigrant communities.
However, due to the lack of cooperation, known criminals are then allowed to continue to offend in those very communities.
It’s also worth noting that ICE is still removing and returning record numbers of migrants who can’t maintain legal status, prioritizing those who are national security and public safety risks.
The letter provided data by various crime categories, including the most egregious crimes, and the data shows vastly larger numbers of criminals falling under the non-detained category than those that are currently in detention.
Here’s a break down of the numbers of non-detained, noncitizens convicted of crimes in the US by the most relevant crime categories included in the letter:
