Prologue
The boy saw the comet, and for the first time in his life he felt as though everything had meaning.
It wasn’t just light across the sky, not just fire against blackness. It was a reminder that beauty could appear suddenly, unexpectedly, and change everything. He watched it streak above the world like it was writing across the heavens. He wanted to believe it was writing to him.
When it vanished, he waited. Nights stretched into weeks, weeks into years. Others told him he was foolish to stare upward, to give his heart to something that might never return. But the boy knew what he had seen.
Even in his darkest hours, he clung to the belief that someday it would return. That his world would be whole again. That his faith in God, and love, and art would be reawakened in his heart.
