Jim Jordan gains support from House Republicans, despite 9 opposing his candidacy
The vote for Speaker of the House is expected sometime today, according to Timcast News.
Jim Jordan has been working tirelessly to gain Republican support after he was nominated by House Republicans, on October 14th, 2023.
In the past few days, Jordan has been in talks with Republicans who voiced opposition to his candidacy.
Last week, Ann Wagner said she would not support Jim Jordan as Speaker, according to a report by Politico. However, she shifted her position and publicly announced she would support Jim Jordan, over working with democrats yesterday in a post on X, featuring an official statement from her office.
In a series of reports written by Timcast News, it was revealed that Jordan has also been able to secure support from Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Mike Rogers, Matt Gaetz, Drew Ferguson, and Vern Buchanan, some of whom previously opposed his bid for Speaker of the House.
There are still a number of House Republicans who have committed to a NO vote for Jordan. Here’s a post by DC_Draino on X where he listed the House Republicans in opposition.
Keep in mind, Buchanan and Ferguson have already flipped to a YES vote.
Janet Yellen suggests we can afford to support Ukraine and Israel, and urges Republicans to fill House Speaker vacancy
Janet Yellen, Secretary of Treasury, stated that the United States can afford to support both Israel and Ukraine in their conflicts. She emphasized that it is a priority to provide funds for both countries.
According to Ground News,
Yellen acknowledged that it is too early to determine the economic consequences of the Israel-Hamas conflict, especially with the volatility of oil and natural gas prices. She called for international efforts to avoid the hostilities extending beyond Israel and Gaza.
It has become critical for Jim Jordan to lock in the necessary 217 votes to secure the Speakership, as pressure from Janet Yellen has made apparent that the funding of Ukraine and Israel is dependent on whether the Speakership gets filled.
In this same summary by Ground News they stated,
Yellen urged Republicans in the House to fill the vacancy left by the removal of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, in order to ensure greater financial support can be provided. She emphasized the need for collaboration to address the energy-driven cost of living crisis.
