Hues is the twentieth entry from the book, The Helpless Romantic, by Travis Salguero. This book is a collection of journal entries presented as poems that give you insight into the Author’s struggles with addiction, mental illness, and his journey overcoming them.
Color me different,
Intertwined with hues pre-existing,
And cannot mix correctly with others.
So do the hues shine so brightly to the colors you paint me,
Slow drips of words, adjectives of due negligence,
Because you do not know my true colors,
Only my top layer.
Underneath a rainbow emits lights and blends,
Pressing onto the darkened epidermis of hardened surface layers.
Knowing one day they will break through,
The inner strength of constant turmoil and fear has not slowed me down,
Ravishing the grey and brown shades to nonexistence,
Do my true colors burst through hardened layers of anguish, uncertainty, and injustice?
I am finally free to color my own canvas the way it was supposed to be.
